What is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 U.S. states and in more than 70 countries. Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
We partner with families and individuals to build or improve homes through affordable housing solutions. Together, we help people build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.
How does Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program work?
Families in need of safe, affordable housing can apply through their local Habitat organization. Each local team evaluates applications based on:
Need for housing
Willingness to partner with Habitat (including contributing sweat equity hours)
Ability to repay an affordable mortgage
Future Habitat homeowners work alongside volunteers to help build their homes and others’. Habitat follows a nondiscriminatory policy: race, faith, and religion are never factors in the selection process.
What is a Habitat for Humanity ReStore?
Habitat ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, building materials, appliances and more—at a fraction of retail prices. ReStores are owned and operated by local Habitat affiliates, and proceeds help fund the construction of more homes in your community and around the world.
How can I donate materials?
Donating building materials, appliances or furniture? Contact your nearest Habitat ReStore to learn how your items can support affordable housing locally.
How can I become a volunteer?
There are many ways to get involved! Contact your local Habitat for Humanity to explore volunteer opportunities—whether building homes, assisting at a ReStore, or helping behind the scenes.

Who We Are
Habitat for Humanity partners with people in your community, and all over the world, to help them build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. With your support, Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life for themselves and for their families. Through our 2020 Strategic Plan, Habitat for Humanity will serve more people than ever before through decent and affordable housing.
